The Nebraska Department of Agriculture has submitted its plan for the regulation of hemp growing in the state to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for approval.
Quick approval by the USDA is envisioned as state hemp plans have recently been approved by the agency for Louisiana, Ohio, and New Jersey.
Nebraska’s hemp plan provides for its Department of Agriculture to be the primary regulator over the production of hemp in the state.
Nebraska’s plan provides for 270 cultivator licenses, 30 processor-handler licenses, and 15 broker licenses. It also will allow up to 400 cultivation sites.
Previously, Nebraska’s Department of Agriculture issued 10 licenses to growers for research purposes under the provisions of the 2014 Farm Bill and a state bill signed into law last year. One of the growers was forced to destroy their crop in November because the plant’s THC levels exceeded the maximum allowable amount.
Nebraska has the potential of becoming a major hemp producer. Nebraska is a leading agriculture state based on output and ranks fourth nationally in total agricultural revenues. Only California, Texas, and Iowa outproduce Nebraska farmers. Based on revenue, Nebraska’s top agricultural products are cattle and calves, corn for grain, soybeans, hogs, and wheat.
